Ice Fishing for Newbies

Ice fishing is a great cold weather activity.

What does an ice fishing newbie need to start this winter sport?

Here is a basic list of what you will need to start ice fishing.

1. You need an auger to cut holes in the ice.  You need to make sure that the auger size will fit the size fish you are looking to catch.  You will need a 6" auger for perch, bluegill and crappie.  You will nee up to a 10"auger for Basss, Pike and Walleye. You can go with a manual or a power auger.  Power augers are more expensive but they are worth it if you really plan to do a great deal of fishing.

2. Tip-ups or Ice Rods.

3.  Cold water fishing line.  Remember that frozen fishing line snaps easily so get a good line that can be used in freezing water.

4.  Jigs and Lures.  For panfish use small jigs, teardrop jigs and tiny spoons.  For larger panfish try mealworms, spikes and for huge fish like Walleye try red worms or fish chunks.

5.  Something to sit on.  Bring a chair or a 5 gallon bucket that you can carry your stuff in and then turn over and sit on. Don't forget one of those seat warmers so you don't get F.A.S which is "Frozen A$$ Syndrome". Sorry.  Bad joke. Undecided

6.  Don't for get the fishing license.

7.  Last but not least something warm to drink and some snacks.  This is probably the most important.  Stay away from alcohol when ice fishing.  Hypothermia is a major problem and alcohol just makes hypothermia more likely.

Have fun!
